भारतम् अस्माकं जन्मभूमिः । अत्र गङ्गा-यमुनादयः नद्यः प्रवहन्ति । वाल्मीकिव्यासादयः अत्रैव सञ्जाताः । ध्रुव-प्रहलाद-नचिकेत इत्यादयः भारतमातुः सुपुत्राः एव। अस्मिन् पाठे ‘ध्रुवस्य’ विषये वर्णितम् अस्ति ।

In ancient times, there was a king Uttanapada who had two sons Dhruva and Uttama from his two wives Suneethi and Suruchi respectively. One day Uttama was sitting on the lap of his father. By chance, Dhruva came there and he also wanted to sit in the lap of his father. But Suruchi stopped him by saying harsh words and sent him back. The boy went to Suneethi and told her about the incident.
The mother consoled the boy and asked him to do the penance and devote his mind to Lord Narayana. Five-year-old Dhruva determined to do so and he went to the forest for this purpose. The sage Narada advised him the Vasudeva mantra and told him to worship the Lord Narayaná. Dhruva did the same. Lord Vishnu was pleased by his great sacrifice, meditation, devotion and worship Vishnu appeared before the boy and gave him the rare title of “Dhruva” which is very difficult to attain.
ध्रुवकथा Summary in Sanskrit
सारांशः पुरा उत्तानपादो नाम राजा आसीत्। तस्य सुनीतिः सुरुचिरिति द्वे भार्ये आस्ताम् । सुनीतेः ध्रुवः इति सुरुचेः उत्तम इति च द्वौ सुतावास्ताम् । एकदा राज्ञः अङ्के उत्तमः उपाविशत् । तं वीक्ष्य ध्रुवोऽपि अङ्के उपवेष्टुमिच्छन् आगतः। तदसहमाना सुरुचिः ध्रुवं अनिन्दयत् । तस्याः वचनेन दुःखितः ध्रुवः सर्वं वृत्तान्तं मात्रे न्यवेदयत् । तदा सुनीतिः ‘भगवन्तं नारायणं शरणमुपगच्छ’ इति अवदत् ।
पञ्चवर्षीयः ध्रुवः मातुरनुमत्या नारायणं साक्षात्कर्तुं घोरमरण्यं प्रस्थितः। नारदात् वासुदेवमन्त्रोपदेशं परिगृह्य तपः आचरत्। भक्तिवश्यः नारायणः तस्य पुरतः प्रादुरभूत् । ध्रुवः तं बहुधा अस्तौत् । सन्तुष्टः भगवान् विष्णुः – ‘वत्स, चिरकालमिदं राज्यं धर्मेण पालय’ इति अनुगृह्य ध्रुवं पदमयच्छत् ।
